Hostage-takers against hostage taking

Mullahs' latest twist in Iran: hostage-takers against hostage taking
May 25, 2006

Mullah-run majlis authorized the government to join the International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages conditionally. The draft bill on membership of mullahs in this convention was ratified at Majlis open session on Wednesday.

According to the ratified bill, mullah-run majlis has given the government the authority to join the convention on the condition that Iran should not comply with the first note of the convention's Article 16.

However, concerning the second note of the same article, the government is authorized to apply it depending on the case.

Note 1 of Article 16 says, "Any dispute between two or more state parties concerning interpretation or application of this convention which is not settled by negotiation shall, at the request of one of them, be submitted to arbitration.

"If within six months from the date of the request for arbitration the parties are unable to agree on the organization of the arbitration, any one of those parties may refer the dispute to the International Court of Justice by request in conformity with the Statute of the Court."

Based on the statement,
mullahs claim that has always declared its strong opposition to all terrorist acts, such as taking hostage innocent individuals, which violates major human rights and freedoms, which is against stability and tranquility of human communities and which prevents development and progress of world states.
